Domaine Carneros in the heart of Carneros, is the California expression  of the tradition and excellence of its founder, Champagne Taittinger. Domaine Carneros makes three traditional styles of sparkling wine: Brut, Brut Rosé and Blanc de Blancs.  Under the Winemaker’s leadership, Domaine Carneros produces wines with care, paying careful attention to the  delicate nature of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes grown on the estate.  Grapes are always hand picked and  gently pressed and production in their state-of-the-art facilities is limited, ensuring the highest level of  craftsmanship possible.  In 2008, Domaine Carneros received organic certification of all its estate vineyards by the CCOF, becoming the first sparkling winery in the United States with all estate vineyards certified.

Domaine Carneros is one of the few wineries where you can relax and enjoy table service in the elegant salon or on the terrace overlooking  exquisite views of endless vineyard covered hills. Award winning sparkling and Pinot Noir wines may be tasted in flights or by the glass. Caviar and artisan cheese plates matched to the wines are also available.

Eileen Crane

Eileen, Domaine Carneros' founding winemaker and president is equally at home in the world of food and fine dining. Raised with a keen appreciation for fine wines and haute cuisine, Eileen originally prepared for a culinary career, earning a master’s degree in nutrition followed by professional training at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America.

After two years of teaching nutrition at the University of Connecticut, Eileen made the decision to turn her passion for wine into a profession, headed west, and enrolled in the U.C. Davis Enology and Viticulture program. Upon completion of her studies, she was hired by Domaine Chandon, where she progressed to the position of assistant winemaker.

The next move for the young winemaker involved a task that most lifelong veterans of the industry never undertake--building a winery. Hired as winemaker and vice president of Gloria Ferrer Champagne Caves, she was entrusted with the dual responsibilities of overseeing the design and construction of the facility in addition to developing the line of sparkling wines.

It turned out to be an experience that served her well. Selected personally by Claude Taittinger for the position of President/Winemaker of Domaine Carneros, dedicated to producing world-class sparkling wines made in the French tradition from famed Carneros region grapes, Eileen oversaw the planning and development of the beautiful Carneros landmark chateau, vineyards and winemaking facility. In 2003, Eileen directed the planning and construction of Domaine Carneros' second winemaking facility, dedicated exclusively to the production of Pinot Noir wines.

It is understandable that Taittinger and Eileen Crane have joined forces as they share a common winemaking style. The elegant, delicate, yet intense style for which Taittinger is well respected is what Eileen strives for. No less surprising is the fact that the joint venture is located in Carneros. Carneros and Eileen Crane go together, as do Carneros and sparkling wine.

Carneros is famous for production of chardonnay and pinot noir grapes, two key ingredients of a premium sparkling wine. An area blessed with a long, cool growing season, Carneros produces grapes which are particularly fine for sparkling wine as they have greater fruit maturity and produce wines with superb balance and a long finish.

In 1992 Domaine Carneros started producing small quantities of fine Estate Pinot Noir. The wines are appreciated for their great depth, balance and long silky finish. In 2003, Domaine Carneros completed a dedicated Pinot Noir Facility that incorporated the largest solar collection system on any winery in the world.

Eileen Crane is one of a handful of women who are now in the forefront of the wine industry in California. Recently recognized as one of the 75 Most Influential Women in Business by the San Francisco Business Times, Eileen is actively involved in numerous wine and civic organizations and is a past president of both the Carneros Quality Alliance and the California Classic Methods/Classic Varieties Society (CM/CV) and currently Chairs the Board of Napa Valley Hospice.

“The first obligation of any wine is to be delicious. The second to create a moment of pleasure and the third to engender good conversation.”

Pinot Noir

Domaine Carneros Domaine Carneros Domaine Carneros

In the early years of the winery, we produced more Pinot Noir grapes than we needed for our own sparkling wines. We sold the grapes to other Carneros wineries and they were always high in demand. In 1992, we thought it would be interesting to make a few barrels just for the employees. When Claude Taittinger, President of Champagne Taittinger, tasted it, he immediately asked that we ship him some for his own cellar and for the cellars of five star hotels he owns in Europe. The following year we brought Pinot Noir to the United States market and it has been in heavy demand ever since.

Sensitive Pinot Noir can be a challenge for winemakers. The delicate, thin-skinned grapes grow best in cool, consistent climates where the fruit can ripen slowly. We are fortunate - the long growing season and cooling maritime breezes of the Carneros Region are ideal, producing wines of distinction virtually ever year.

Domaine Carneros produces three different Pinot Noirs:

Avant-Garde, meant to be drunk young, is fresh and fruity

Domaine Carneros - Estate is rich and beautifully balanced

The Famous Gate shows more intense notes of smoke and toast.

The latest complement to our distinguished line of pinot noirs, the Avant-Garde Pinot Noir is the third pinot noir in our collection. Created to be the vanguard of the vintage, this wine heralds the particular fresh fruit qualities of the Carneros Region.

The Avant-Garde is a delicate wine intensely aromatic with notes of cherry, raspberries, spice, dark chocolate and black tea. Available only at the winery and in select export markets.

Domaine Carneros - Estate

Our classic Pinot Noir made to show off the superb qualities of our organic vineyard, is rich with fruit tones of black cherry, raspberry and black current overlaid with notes of chocolate, toast, clove and exotic spices. Luscious flavors end in a very long and silky finish.

Wine Enthusiast Rating, 91 points: 2006 Domaine Carneros Pinot Noir, Carneros, $35

"This bottling has been getting steadily richer and better over the years and has now reached the point where it’s an authentic Carneros beauty. The ’06 is a Pinot Noir to drink now, to savor its raspberry and cherry freshness, crispness and silky texture." — Steve Heimoff  (12/31/2008)

The Famous Gate - Estate

Our original Pinot Noir produced in 1992 is a stylish wine showing of the "hand" of the winemaker.  It highlights smokey toasty aromas and is redolent with blackberries and dark cherry notes.  A wine that ages gracefully, it will intrigue for many years.

As with all of our Pinot Noirs, The Famous Gate is produced in small, open topped fermenters.  The wine is then transferred to barrels and aged for a total of ten months. An exhaustive French barrel program comprises seven cooperages that specifically air-dry wood staves for us for three years, yielding softer tannins and less astringency.

Brut Cuvée Sparkling Wine

Vintage dated each year, the Domaine Carneros Brut Cuvée represents the best of Carneros pinot noir and chardonnay made into a classic sparkling wine. The appellation is 100%Carneros. The Brut was aged in the bottle for three years before release.  It will continue to develop further depth and complexity as it ages.

The vast majority of sparkling wine and champagne in the world is made in the Brut style. Brut refers to the dryness or level of sugar of the wine. The sugar content of a Brut-style sparkling wine is 0-15 grams per liter.

Although Brut refers to the dryness of the wine, Brut-style sparkling wine and champagne is also traditionally a blend of chardonnay and pinot noir

Brut Rosé Sparkling Wine

The Domaine Carneros Brut Rosé Cuvée de la Pompadour, celebrates the life and times of Madame de Pompadour (the great courtesan and mistress of Louis XV) who is credited with introducing Champagne to the court and was an influential tastemaker in the matters of art, architecture and philosophy–famous for her comment, “Champagne is the only wine a woman can drink and remain beautiful.”

Domaine Carneros Brut Rosé is a wine of great balance, emphasizing fruity and floral characteristics to a greater extent than evident in the Brut or Le Rêve. It is made strictly with artisan attention to quality, with sourcing exclusively from Carneros and the use of time-honored Champenoise methods of production. A blend of 58% Pinot Noir, 42% Chardonnay, the Brut Rose is meant to be enjoyed at a fairly young age, when the fruity character is still predominant yet there is enough age to make the wine round and balanced.

The wine’s aroma has hints of wild strawberries and roses with notes of peach Although a pale pink in color, Brut Rosé is not sweeter than our other wines.  It is a true Brut.

Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs Sparkling Wine

Le Rêve, which translates to “the dream” in French, is a luxury Blanc de Blancs cuvee originally inspired by Taittinger’s Comtes de Champagne.  Blanc de Blancs means "white of whites" or white wine made from white grapes.

Eileen Crane and Claude Taittinger believe that the finest sparkling wine in the world is Blanc de Blancs made from Chardonnay grapes.  These wines have greater finesse and ageability and Le Rêve is no exception.   The Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs is generally 100% Chardonnay (with a  small percent of Pinot Blanc in some years).  Aged a full 6 years prior to release, Le Rêve drinks beautifully upon release and continues to develop for years in the cellar.

Our Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs has repeatedly been rated "The Best Sparkling Wine in America." This current release is a great successor to these wines and exemplifies the best of our estate-grown chardonnay.
