In 1974, shortly after their Peace Corp assignment in Colombia, Tom Clark and Laurie Claudon came to the Napa Valley, new baby boy in tow.  Immediately caught up in the infectious energy, they were ready to take their place among a small group of visionary grape growers and winemakers. Together, that group of pioneers laid the foundation for the unrivaled status of today’s Napa Valley.

Over the next four years as their family grew. Tom continued to refine his grape growing expertise and Laurie learned along with him.  In 1979, Tom founded Clark Vineyard Management and began developing and managing vineyards under his own company.

Then in 1989 pressed by a friend, Tom and Laurie hiked a piece of property on the north east side of Howell Mountain.  Though unproven, it was the proverbial love at first sight and ideal for a Cabernet vineyard.   Because of Tom’s considerable reputation, the sellers desire to support the purchase and the couple’s willingness to bet on themselves, they leased and developed the property while eventually exercising their option to buy.  Working together, the family joked about calling it Sweat Equity, but the vineyard they developed would become Clark-Claudon Vineyards.

Their business was founded in the old tradition of family winemaking where the art begins in the vineyard and ends with a beautiful bottle of wine. The name Clark-Claudon and the logo’s meeting of the two feathers represent a joint commitment to the pursuit of their dream and to the preservation of the environment that supports it. Since then, Clark-Claudon Vineyards has received critical acclaim for both their Estate Grown Cabernet and their Wild Iris Sauvignon Blanc.

To this day, Clark-Claudon Vineyards is a family affair.

2010 Clark-Claudon Estate Cabernet

IN THE VINEYARDS & WINERY

Location, location, location; again it made the difference in 2010.  Following night harvest and triple sorting, the berries from each harvest lot produced a deep purple flow into French Oak barrels.  There they began the next two years of their life.  In barrel they were hand punched down three times a day, facilitating optimum color, and flavor development as well as gently integrating tannins.

The artful blending of this vintage not only included the 5 harvest lots, but also the individual barrels from each of those lots.  Exploring the resulting combinations was a winemakers dream!

WINEMAKER NOTES

Our 2010 Estate Cabernet will greet you with its beautiful deep ruby color and hints of geranium on the rim. From there enjoy a spectacular burst of boysenberry, blueberry and black currant, plus undertones of honeycomb, crème brulee, spicy oak and sage.  After a velvety entrance, this wine is packed with juicy black cherry, dark stone fruit, a rich round mid-pallet, perfect balance and fine tanins. Enjoy the lingering notes of quinine and the long cedar, fruit and dark chocolate finish.  Pure splendor in a glass!

2009 Clark-Claudon Estate Cabernet

IN THE WINERY

The vineyard was night harvested on 6 different dates to assure that the fruit from each elevation and exposure reached optimum ripeness. After triple sorting, only perfect berries remained to be cold soaked and then gently fermented for an extended time. As always, each harvest lot was treated separately, in essence creating 6 different wines.  These wines were then artistically blended, in just the right proportions, to produce this rare, 2009 Estate Cabernet.

Our goal is always to allow the terroir of Clark-Claudon Vineyards to speak through its wines. The 2009 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a perfect example of an expertly farmed, single, mountain side vineyard with fully expressed fruit.

It presents with dark hues and explosive ripe plum, strawberry and dark stone fruit. It then brings a beautiful mouth feel of full bodied texture, lingers with perfect balance and elegance while adding; floral notes, dry herbs and hints of cola to the abundant fruit. This exceptional wine follows with a long finish of dark chocolate, floral notes, spicy oak and plum liquor.

2009 Eternity

IN THE VINEYARD

2009 was a year that produced ripe, rich Cabernet with profound structure.  In addition, our Petit Verdot came on line with wildly delicious depth.  It was a year that presented amazing fruit for equally amazing options.

IN THE WINERY

The 2009 Eternity reflects the collaboration of two master winemakers; Frederic Delivert and Jean Hoefliger. Together they combined their artistic talents with humor, heart and noticeable testosterone, to finesse a wine with exceptional power and grace.  Given the high quality of the vintage, Frederic and Jean selected their favorite barrels to launch the Bordeaux blend, Eternity; our Inaugural Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

WINE MAKER NOTES

The 2009 Eternity speaks of heritage from its dark inky color and purple rim to its beautifully complex nose. Breathe deeply to find layers of jammy blackberry, ripe plum, grenadine, dark chocolate, coffee beans, black pepper and violets balanced nicely with spicy vanilla, & cedar.

You might want to just stop there and linger…but, this big soft full bodied wine will coat your mouth with crème de cassis, violets and blueberry cream within a big frame of sweet chewy tannins.  Enjoy through a long cassis and blackberry finish with notes of violets, sweet oak and graphite. And then… take another luscious sip.

TASTING NOTES

2012 Wild Iris Sauvignon Blanc is freshly inviting; brilliant gold with touches of emerald paradot. A complex wine, Iris reveals aromas of gooseberry, a touch of cassis buds, hints of cantaloupe, yellow raspberries and slight notes of curry and jalapeno. The mouth feel is soft and fresh with a cornucopia of star fruit, apricot and honeysuckle along with its signature minerality. Enjoy its long smooth fruit filled finish with hints of vanilla.

The 2012 vintage again succeeds in preserving a perfect balance between crisp varietal flavors and rich creamy texture. This makes Iris the perfect white for pool side relaxing or an elegant table. Enjoy!

WINERY NOTES

Wild Iris begins with flawlessly ripe fruit that was handpicked under the stars.  At the winery this perfect fruit is then de-‐stemmed, triple sorted and gently pressed, allowing only the free run juice to become Wild Iris. This 2012 vintage was then fermented in a combination of stainless steel, French Acacia and French Oak barrels with daily lees stirring for four months.  Then, only the best lots were blended to capture the beautiful essence of the 2012 Wild Iris Sauvignon Blanc. The resulting wine is a stunning marriage of nature, art and passion.

2012 Wild Iris Sauvignon Blanc

TASTING NOTES

2010 Wild Iris greets with abundant aromas of gooseberry, boxwood, fresh pear and a hint of cassis.  A first taste will bring fresh and lively flavors of white flower, pear and citrus as a mineral tone fills the mouth with beautiful texture. With time in the glass, 2010 Iris gains more volume and creaminess accompanied by added flavors of vanilla with hints of almond, nutmeg and honey.  The very long finish begs for more.  With this vintage Wild Iris reveals, she is not only playful and gorgeous, but also one to be taken seriously.

WINERY NOTES

The hand picked, perfectly ripe fruit was double sorted.  44% was barrel fermented and 56% was fermented in stainless steel.  30% of the barrels were new.  Of those, 30% were French Acacia and 60% were French Oak.  Lees stirring occurred in both barrel and stainless steel lots for the first four months of aging.  The barrel fermentation and stirring where both utilized to bring optimum texture to the wine.  The combination of the stainless and barrel fermentation succeeded in preserving a perfect balance between crisp varietal flavors and rich creamy textures.

Yet now; with its gorgeous aromatics, textured yet crisp mouth feel and lusciously long finish, the 2009 Wild Iris will take you to a whole new level of pleasure.

Our 2009 Wild Iris is the perfect wine for an elegant first course, Spring and Summer sipping or a laid back evening with family and friends.  You too will be excited by this wine!

WINEMAKER NOTES

The aromas in this wine literally fill the room; exotic passion fruit, subtle citrus blossoms, ripe mangos and delicate rose petals with hints of cantaloupe, green apple and vanilla. On the palate the rich texture and bright acidity is perfectly balanced; giving a round, creamy, yet refreshing mouth feel.  The very long finish is as beautiful as the start with fruit packed intensity.

WINERY NOTES

The fruit was harvested at optimum ripeness and then double sorted in the winery to assure that not a single leaf, stem, jack or flawed berry remained.  It was then gravity fed into the fermentation vessels.  80% went into stainless steel while 20% went into barrel; 6.6% new French Acacia, the balance neutral French Oak.  The stainless steel insured crisp varietal freshness while the barrel program; allowing stirring 3 times a week for two months following fermentation, gave the wine a subtle, yet rich texture.
